Mon p'tit monde / My little world
En 2004, j'ai commencé par mon premier Mac. Premier parce que c'était pas là le dernier. Mais j'ai commencé en beauté : un Powermac bi-processeurs 1.8Ghz avec 2GB de RAM, 400GB de disque dur, une carte ATI Radeon 9800 PRO Mac SE avec 256MB de RAM et une iSight.
Crime que j'étais excité quand Purolator a sonné à la porte et que la boîte noire avec des grosses photos de mon premier Mac dessus c'est retrouvé sur le plancher de ma cuisine ! J'm'en souviens encore comme si c'était hier. J'ai acheté cet ordi en planifiant de le garder pour 5 ans. Ça fait déjà plus de deux ans et ça va super bien! Premièrement, un Mac ça vieillit moins vite parce qu'il y en a moins aux alentours pour le comparer (un seul voisin dans mon bloc a un Mac et on ne se parle pas beaucoup). Ensuite, Mac OS est le seul système d'exploitation qui va plus vite à chaque nouvelle version, sans avoir besoin de revamper sa machine au complet, contrairement à Windows.
Je me suis offert ce bijou parce que dans la même année, j'allais me faire opérer pour la mâchoire et que ça allait êter assez rock and roll, alors pour me remonter le moral, je me suis offert un défi :)
Ensuite, on a trouvé un Powerbook sur E-Bay beau, bon et pas cher. C'était un G4 1.0 GHz, 768MB RAM avec un disque dur de 40GB. Une petite perle, pour la taille.
Plus tard, mon ex-employeur m'a vendu un super rétro iMac G3 300 Mhz avec un maigre 192 MB de RAM. Wow.. un ordinateur qui roulait avec 192 MB.. me semble que ça fait tellement vieux... :) Il ira finir sa vie chez ma nièce dans quelque semaines. Elle a besoin d'un ordi pour faire du traitement de texte et surfer le 'net. Avec Mac OS 10.3, ça sera suffisant. Nous l'avons upgradé à 256 MB de RAM et 6MB de Video RAM, et un disque dur de 80GB.
Finalement, il y a quelques mois, j'ai obtenu un contrat qui m'a demandé d'avoir un ordinateur Windows. Quoi d'autres qu'un Macbook ! Un modèle blanc, 2.0Ghz, avec 1 GB de RAM et un disque dur de 80GB. Je suis super satisfait, je le traîne partout, c'est mon petit bijou perso :)
Mais qu'est-ce que je fais pour avoir besoin de tous ces ordis? Je donne des cours de graphismes sur le web, je fait aussi de petits contrats de photographie et de retouche d'image, je produis des montages photographiques à l'occasion. Je touche aussi au vidéo et j'aime bien la 3D. Mes logiciels de choix : Photoshop CS2, Photoshop Elements 4 (pour l'enseignement), Final Cut Express HD, CorelDraw (oui, oui, même si ça n'existe plus pour Mac), Bryce 5.5 et Office 2004. Cependant, j'utilise aussi Illustrator CS2, Motion 1.0 et iWork, mais beaucoup moins souvent. Je suis aussi très gadget alors j'ai une foule de petits utilitaires comme MacJournal, Onyx, Transmit, etc. J'en parlerai d'ailleurs à l'occasion.

In 2004, I got my first Mac. First because it would not be the last to come. And I started in beauty and style : a Powermac dual processors 1.8 GHz with 2GB of RAM, Radeon Mac SE 9800 Pro 256 MB, 400 GB of hard disk drive and an iSight.
Damn, was I excited when Purolator rang my door and I saw the big black box on the kitchen floor, decorated with super big pictures of my Powermac. I remember it as if it was yesterday! I got this computer planning to keep it for at least 5 years. So far, so good, over two years done! Mac don't look and feel old as PC would because, for starters, you have less other models to compare it with (only one other neighbour in my block as a Mac and we don't talk much). And Mac OS is about the only operating system I know which is faster and faster with each new versions, with requiring a complete refitting of the computer, contrary to Windows.
I got this little gem because in few months, I was to have a major surgery for my jaws and I knew the times ahead would probably be rough, so to get my spirits high, I got myself a nice little challenge :)
After that, we found a nice little Powerbook on E-bay, very cheap, good and nice looking. It was a G4 1.0 GHz, 768MB RAM with a 40GB hard disk drive. A real little gem for its size. It will leave us soon, unfortunately.
Then, my ex-employer sold me its only Macintosh computer, an iMac G3 very retro! 300 Mhz with a thin 192 MB of RAM. Wow.. a computer running with 192 MB of RAM.. it feels so.. old! It is going to end its life with my little niece as she needs a computer for word processing and surfing the net. With Mac OS 10.3, it'll be good enough.
Finally, a few months ago, I got a contract which required me to have access to a Windows capable comptuer. You guessed it already, I got none other then a Macbook! A white one, with 2.0GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 80 GB of hard disk drive. I am very satisfied, it's my little pride! I carry it with me almost all the times.
But what I am doing with all those computers? Well, first of all I teach online graphic classes. I also volunteer time on a few boards (Photoshop Elements, mainly, but on occasions at Apple's). I also do some work in photography and photo retouching. I make photo montage. I also do a bit of video and 3D.
My favourite applications are Photoshop CS 2, Photoshop Elements 4 (for teaching), Final Cut Express HD, CorelDraw (yeah, yeah, even if it's discontinued), Bryce 5.5 and Office 2004. However, I also use Illustrator CS 2, Motion 1.0 and iWork '06, way less often. I am also very techie, so I enjoy little apps like MacJournal, Onyx, Transmit, etc. I'll talk to you about these on occasions.
